I think that the U.S.-Canadian magazine dispute was greatly influenced by true desires to protect Canadian culture. Even back in 1920, protective tariffs were placed on foreign magazines (Culture and Globalization, n.d.). Even though the majority of the magazines sold in Canada are foreign, â€Å"in 1970...a Committee on Mass Media concluded that â€Å"magazines constitute the only national press†Ã¢â‚¬  (Culture and Globalization, n.d.) that Canada possessed at the time. During this time period, not every household had televisions, so magazines were a good way to push out advertisements and to share ideas and ways of the culture there. That was a great medium to get ideas spread throughout the population. This was how a lot of people received new recipes, read about new inventions/products, etc. One could not simply get on their computer and look up the newest trends, see what was hot in pop culture, or have a nearly infinite amount of information at their fingertips. People had to listen to the radio, watch television if your family had one, read the newspaper, and read magazines if they wanted to stay up to date on what was going on with their country and throughout the world. I don’t feel that the government was pressured to protect the financial market in the magazine industry because they only printed about one-tenth of the magazines sold within Canada (Culture and Globalization, n.d.). Working in Teams Reflection After reading The Five Dysfunctions of a Team by Pat Lencioni, discussing the function of effective teams in class, and completing various team building exercises, I have developed a much better understanding of the importance of a proper team in a business setting and how good team work can produce more efficient and productive results. Having played a variety of team sports throughout my life, I saw a lot of parallels throughout the class work on team building between positive teamwork and success. The fourth aspect of a dysfunctional group is lack of communication. I believe that this is by far the most important aspect of a good team. Without good communication it is hard to maintain accountability, trust, and to express opinions. The key to success in all the ice breaker games was being able to communicate with your team effectively in a manner that everybody you were working with understood the point you were trying to make. We have learned that communication is more than just verbal it is also nonverbal, such as the body language and hand gestures that you use. In my group’s ice breaker game and presentation we tried to demonstrate that non verbal communication was important through the use of video as well as when we required our groups of to use charades type gestures to explain to the person assigned to draw what they were supposed to be drawing. The final aspect of a dysfunctional team was the avoidance of accountability. In the book it was said that teams setting low standards for one another are less likely to be accountable. If they set high standards, teams are more willing to hit bench marks. Rather than just stating one fact, she gives them all. In McCullough’s speech, he uses lists as well. He states that children have been pampered, fed, catered to, and so on. He uses this to get across that we have been babied our entire lives, so will we be prepared for the real world? He also uses list with statistics stating that somewhere someone is just like you. McCullough uses â€Å"There are 3. 2 million seniors from 37,000 high schools. † He continues on with the numbers of class presidents, swagger jackers, and pairs of Uggs. This is to get across that no one is different and there is always another person with the exact same thing as you. McCullough uses more humor. This makes the speech less offensive to the audience. While reading this speech you don’t notice the humor much, but when actually viewing the speech it is more humorous to the crowd. What some might think is humorous others might not. In conclusion, even though both use similar strategies in their work McCullough’s article is more persuasive. He makes you actually think that you are not special by adding comparisons, lists and emotions.
